Skype Interview

This is my Skype interview with Frank Cope. He is a Junior at the University of West Florida in pensacola. He plays soccer for the Argos and the interview was about his season.

1. Tell me a little about your history at UWF?
--Well, I was recruited to play for them by my Coach, Bill Elliot. At first I was a little unsure of the school, but it has grown on me. The soccer has been really good as we have a great program and have won our conference for the past 5 years now. The school has a lot of foreign people and that has also been very neat  to experience. I have made many new friends that I never imagined I would have made if it wasn't for soccer.

2. So I heard your team went on a cruise for preseason?
--It wasn't really our preseason but it was a chance to get some training in the summer. It was a lot of fun and there were a lot of team bonding activities. We also had the chance to get some really good training for the season. We went to Jamaica, Haiti, Grand Cayman, and Cozumel. In each location, we either played the national team or had a session with a team from there. It was a lot of fun and it was a great experience that I will remember for the rest of my life.

3. How did your team do this past season?
--We had a really good season. We went 15-4-2 before the national tournament and won our conference for the fifth straight season. This was my third time to win a conference championship since I am a junior this season. Our team made the national tournament and had to play Rollins in the first round in Orlando. Rollins has a very good program and defeated us by a score of 1-0.  They ended up making the national championship and lost this past weekend.

4. Well I heard you had a good season, did you receive any awards?
--I actually started all of the games the past two seasons but this year was pretty special. I received many different acknowledgments. I was an honorable mention All-American, first team All-South Region, Unanimous first team All-Conference, GSC All Tournament Team, and I was 7th in the nation for assists.

5. Well that's very exciting! What are your expectations for the next season?
--The team will be bringing back most of the starters so I'm hoping my senior season will yield a national championship but you never know. I'm very excited and can't wait to see who the coach brings in to help us. Either way, we should have a very good team next season.

Ok well thank you so much for your time and I wish your team the best of luck for next season!!
--Thanks a lot and I hope you receive an A on your interview.

Final Post for PLN

The above image is a screenshot of my Personal Learning Network. For my PLN I have added a variety of websites. In the bottom left corner I have my blog, the class blog, Skype, a few videos we watched for our blogs, as well as some websites I was able to watch through this EDM310 class. In the bottom right corner I have added more of my entertainment section. This section includes websites such as twitter, itunes, pandora, apple, and my horoscope. I also have all of my email accounts (Gmail, AOL, Jaguar Main) and USA homepage. In the top right corner I have some of my personal websites. I really love having my PLN because it is so convenient. I created it using Symbaloo which is so easy to use because I can easily delete and add different websites as I find them.

Summary for C4T

For my C4T 4 the teacher I was assigned was Beth Still. For the first post, titled "Teaching Kids in Poverty", I commented on she talked about teaching children who were "at risk" or in poverty. This post really caught my attention because she said it takes a special person to do this. I agree with her completely because I know I want to teach children and help children, but I'm not sure I would be the right person to teach those kids. I think these children need inspirational people to teach them and that's exactly what Beth Still is. She's an inspirer and helps these kids to be successful.
For the second post, titled "Adjustments Lead to Major Improvements" I read by Beth Still she talked about how so many students failed to finsih their final project for her class and in turn failed this class. She didn't blame her students for this, she realized they had other issues to deal with in their home life so she changed the way it is done. She decided to take it step by step day by day and do it through the year reather than all at once. She went to great lengths to help these students and I think it's awesome. I'm sure these students will one day appreciate her if they don't already.

Summary's for C4K 8-11

C4K 8: For this post I was assigned a class blog to comment on. The blog is a class blog out of Australia of 2nd graders. The post I commented on was about the class's followers of their blog. They were close to 20,000 followers and they had some predictions of the date they would reach 20,000 followers. One student, Riley, guessed the closest to the date. I congratulated Riley on his well guessed prediction and I think it is awesome they have so many followers.

C4K 9:For this post I was assigned a class blog as well. This is an 8th grade class's blog and their post was about a dance class they are able to take at their school. They posted a video showing the students dancing. They do ballroom dances to modern pop music. I thought this was so cool because not everyone likes to dance, but with the music they use it will show students that everyone can dance. I thought this was very cool and if I had this opportunity in school I would have taken it.

C4K 10: For this assignment I was assigned a student from Mrs. Melito's class. Marigrace was assigned to answer a few questions thoroughly and she did such a great job with this post. She had a few spelling and grammatical errors, but overall did an awesome job.

C4K 11: For this assignment I was assigned a student named Trey in Mrs. Huebner's 2nd grade class. His blog post was about Iowa football and he wrote "I Love Iowa Football They Are The Best :)" His post was really cute and had different fonts. He also did every other word yellow and black.

Additional Assignment 5

For the post "Sketchy Portraits," I think Mr. Spencer's main idea was that middle schoolers are going to act like they do and be considered rude because it is who they are. I think he was trying to prove the point that they aren't being rude, but being creative. For "The Medium Shapes the Learning", I think Mr. Spencer's idea here was to say not all technology is good in the classroom. Some technologies will be distracting to students and we shouldn't bring certain things in a classroom. The post titled "He Just likes the Class for the Pencils" is about the teachers. Students will not show respect to teachers who don't seem to care or show respect back. Kids aren't stupid. They know when a teacher has an attitude.

Blog Post 13

Alabama Learning Exchange (ALEX) is a website that teachers can use for lesson plans and other things for the classroom. It has different sections on the website which include, Courses of Study, Web Resources, Lesson Plans, Search, Personal Workplace, Professional Learning, Podcast Treasury, and ALEXville. Teachers can find useful tools from each of these catgeories. For example, with the Lesson Plans, teachers can see what other teachers have done in the past as far as "lesson plans" and get ideas. If the teacher chose the category "Courses of Study," the teacher will be directed to pick a subject then choose what grade level. After this, the website will show different things to do in that particular subject with the class.
ALEX is a great website that every teacher should visit. It gives so much information that will help teachers new and old. Once I become a teacher I will use this website as much as possible. It will help me to see how I'm doing compared to other teachers as well as keep me updated with new things teachers will be doing.

Project 14: Teach Someone

Teach Someone

Blog post 12

For this post write a paragraph about the things you've seen and read in this video. Talk about what you agree with or disagree with.

Results for project 6

For my survey I asked some questions about the price of college. Of the 16 students I asked, 11 will be paying for their school which is close to 70%. With this said 62% will be in debt after they graduate from college. Of that 62%, 75% will have at least $15,000 in debt some may even have more than $20,000. 50% of the students are employed and are using this money to pay for their living expenses. Close to 40% live on campus and 40% live off campus while the remaining 20% live with their parents. 62% do have roommates that help with rent and utilities as well as other living expenses. 80% of the students on a scale of 1 to 10 agree with at least a 7 or higher that school is overpriced. With this information I gathered, I believe as well as my fellow classmates that college is definitely overpriced. With the way the economy is today, college graduates are having a hard time finding a job to pay back these debts. The government as well as school administrations should take every circumstance into consideration and think about the students rather than the universities.

Report on Project 16

For project 16 my group has decided to use videos about how technology can be helpful to educate students about other cultures. The people in my group are Morgan Mohler, Kathryn Buchanan and myself. We are going to explore and talk about the ways blogs, Skype and wikis can be used in classrooms to educate students on cultures from around the world. We will talk about how we can use these technologies in our own classrooms when we become teachers ourselves. After we have all our information and videos we will put them together using Glogster.

Summary for C4T #3

For C4T teacher 3 I was assigned Ann Carnevale. Her blog post was titles Computer Centers- Take 2. Her post was giving teachers different ideas on how to use and what to use the computers in the classroom for. She says first we need to decide the rotation of the computer use. She suggests putting a list of the students name by the computer and just go down in the list in sequence. After deciding on the rotation, you need to decide when you use them. The best time would be when you’re not directly teaching to the whole class. The next step she tells us is to decide what activities we will be teaching. The activities should take 5 to 15 minutes. She also put pictures up as examples taken from her own class room. I thought Ms. Ann did such a good job giving ideas and options for computer use in the classroom. I especially liked the pictures she posted because I am more of a visual learner. I really enjoyed this blog post and I learned a lot from her.

C4K's 3-7 summaries

C4K #3
This blog post was from Room 10@ PT England School and the post I was assigned was from a boy named Eric. Eric posted a video about James Cook. His video was well presented and his information was great. He spoke with enthusiasm and did such a good job on his video.
C4K #4
This post was from a 6th graders blog titled BrookeLog10’s Blog. Her name is Brooke and her post was about a Japanese Lote Project she had to do for class. She had to write about a Japanese festival and include pictures, colors, and Japanese writing. She said she got a 6/10 on her project because she started it last minute. I thought it was cool they’re learning about Japan and I think she should start her projects a little earlier so she leaves out careless mistakes.
C4K# 5
For this assignment I commented on a 7th graders blog named Jesse. She had a post about herself and didn’t have much to say. She said her name is Jesse and she has one cat and two dogs. I told her to maybe add to that some things such as her favorite food and color. She could also talk about her friends and family.
C4K #6
This blog post was by a 7th grader named Madeline. Her post was called “My Question of the Week”. Her question was why the sky is blue. She says she knows it has to do with reflections in space, but she wants to really know why it is blue. I didn’t have the answer to that, but I did tell her I like the color blue and I think her question is a pretty common question.
C4K #7
This comment was on a class blog called Mr. McClung’s World. The blog post was titled “Lesson’s Learned”. His first lesson was about a boy named Chevy who is transferring schools and he had one request before he left. This request was to be on the weekly lessons blog post. Mr. McClung goes on to say how greatly Chevy will be missed. I thought it was pretty awesome that Mr. McClung could include him like that and I hope to one day fulfill the requests of my students as Mr. McClung has done. The second lesson on this post was about technology such as videos and smart boards. This is obviously interesting to me because this EDM class has taught me so much about technology. Finally, his third lesson of the week was about charity. The charity was about flexing muscles. The students could vote on who had the best pose, but every time they voted they had to pay a quarter and it all went to charity. I thought this was a fun and interesting way to raise money for charity. Most kids I know would love to do this.

Blog post 11

Ms. Cassidy's Approach to Technology

I really enjoyed the first video because I plan on teaching Kindergarden or 1st grade and those were the students she had in her video. Her approach to technology, in my opinion, is really great because she doesn't over do it and they really enjoy it. I will probably use blogging in my class room because this not only let's them say how they feel about certain situations, it teaches them to use to internet, how to type, and improves their writing skills. Just from blogging in this class alone I have seen improvements in my writing skills. Starting this at an early age only seems like the most knowledgable thing to do. Ms. Cassidy is right when she says technology isn't going anywhere and everyone needs to learn about it. Also, when she says "why would they want to hand write something for her to see when they can type it on their blog for everyone to see". Putting something on the internet for anyone to see only helps the student to realize that what they put on will reflect who they are as a person and this in turn could make or break their success. I really enjoyed the video and the skype chat. They were extremely helpful and I will be using these things in my class room one day.

additional assignment 3

I thought this video was really cool and Sir Robinson keeps it interesting. I think one of the most important points was when he talks about ADHD. He made it humerous, yet told the truth. Today, doctors just prescribe a medicine to keep children focused, but what really is going on is that the student is not excelling in a particular subject, but they could be excelling in something else. Most of the time it has to do a lot with the teacher. For example, I was told I have ADHD my freshman year of high-school. I'm taking a history class this year and with history being my worst subject I thought I should take my medicine. My teacher makes history so interesting and fun I don't even need my medicine. This is cool because it shows I'm really not ADHD, because when something interests me I can pay attention and really do well. I don't disagree with anything in this video, I feel like Sir Robinson makes valid points and supports his arguments with great examples. As an educator, I can hopefully one day help my students to see their more intellectual side and help them to figure out what they are interested in so they have a successful life. I thought this presentation was pretty cool and if I had to do one I would want to be the artist or maybe the narrator.

Blog Post 10

An Open Letter To Educators
Morgan Bayda does a great job of showing and explaining the video posted by Dan Brown. In his video, he explains why he dropped out of school. His reason was that “school is interfering with my education”. This didn’t make sense until I heard exactly what he was talking about. He talks about sitting in a lecture for two hours writing as quickly as you can while your professor flips through slides and allows you to talk to no one except the professor s themselves. I can relate to this in that most of my classes are this exact way. The teachers believe they are educating us by telling us to take notes about facts, learn them, and we will be tested. This is not educating us and will not help us in the real world. After I’ve taken my notes, memorized them, and was tested on them I have already forgotten what I memorized and in actuality nothing was learned. I can relate to Morgan Bayda in the way that all of her classes allowed no talking and discussing the “facts” with other students. Comparing that to this EDM 310 class, it is almost polar opposite. In this class we are encouraged to talk to other classmates and discuss our assignments, leave comments, and help each other out. This seems the same as the Ed computer classes Morgan Bayda took herself. Overall, I thought this post and video were well thought out and I completely agree with them.

Two Questions That Can Change Your Life
I liked this video a lot and I think those two questions can actually change my life. My sentence is “They are the reason I am furthering my education”. I really liked this video and I can now ask myself the second question every night of “Was I better today than yesterday?” My answer to this question will hopefully keep me motivated to continue my education and in the future help students to become educated. Maybe I can be the reason a student wants to further their education. Great things to think about.

Blog Post 9

“What I’ve Learned This Year” By: Mr. McClung
This post about Mr. McClung’s first year of teaching was really inspiring. I felt that everything he had to say made so much sense and his response to his own thoughts about teaching are extremely helpful. He starts off by saying that reading the crowd is one of the first things he has learned from being a teacher. Basically, we don’t need to focus on ourselves. Don’t worry about doing the lesson plan perfect because the superiors are watching. We need to focus on the students and make sure they are actually learning. He then talks about being flexible and being able to communicate. These two thoughts, in my opinion, are two of the most important ideas. Throughout high-school, I played sports and if it weren’t for my teachers being flexible and able to communicate with me I would’ve failed majority of my classes. I missed many classes due to away games and my teachers were always willing to work with me to keep me on top of my assignments. Being responsible was another thing Mr. McClung talked about. If a teacher isn’t responsible he or she really shouldn’t be teaching. Our job as educators is to never let the student get down on themselves for not doing well; this is being responsible. After responsibility comes technology. He says we shouldn’t be afraid of technology. I am so thankful to be taking this class because this class alone has taken me out of my comfort zone with technology and introduced me to so many amazing things. I agree that no one should be afraid of technology and everyone needs to realize it is here to make our lives so much easier if we would let it. Another great point brought up my Mr. McClung is to always listen to your students. This is so important because if the students realize you don’t care, why should they care? I had a few classes in high-school like this and to this day I regret not caring. I had teachers that would just give everyone As and I was ok with that because as long as the teacher didn’t care, I didn’t care. Finally he talks about how important it is to never quit learning. Once teachers accomplish their goal of becoming a teacher, many believe their learning process is over and it’s now time to teach. Wrong. Teachers should always be willing to learn while they teach. I really enjoyed what Mr. McClung had to say and I agree with him 100%.

Timetost Timeline project 9b

Blog Post 8

This Is How We Dream Part 1 and 2
In these two videos, Richard Miller explains how much things have changed when it comes to writing and researching. He describes our desktop as a workshop and we use Word Processing apps to write about our research. We no longer have to go to the library we can easily use the internet to find exactly what we are looking for.
While books in the library only have so many copies, the internet is full of different copies. We are now able to share our information and while 3 people could be looking at the same book in the library, millions can be looking online at the same book. Although the internet having these sources and information is so convenient and helpful, I hope the print copies will stay around. Internet is not always reliable and often crashes. In the case that a research paper is due in a week and my computer crashes I would go to the library.
I don’t think I am completely prepared to write with multimedia, but as I continue with my school and learn new things everyday about technology, I will be ready when the time is necessary. As an educator I must learn to do this because technology increases day to day and when I’m a teacher my students will already know what to do. I need to be able to do what they can do, but teach them and learn from them at the same time.

Chipper and EDM 310 for dummies
I thought both of these videos were well thought out and had extremely important points to them. The video about Chipper was pretty funny. The moral of it was that you have to always do your work and do it on time. You cannot rely on someone else to do it for you. If this is the case, you will never make it far in life. The EDM 310 video, I thought, was well produced as well as had a good point. The main idea was that this class is difficult and can make you go crazy if you do not know how to use the tools and websites. Once they learned how to use them they realized how beneficial this class will be for all classes. I haven’t had any great ideas for my video and after watching these two videos I feel I need to put much more thought into mine. I haven’t decided what I’m doing yet, but hopefully my video will be equally as great as theirs. This class really is so helpful for me in all my classes as well as life itself.

Smartboard critique
Michael Staton has given two interesting reason as to why he believes “Smartboards are A Dumb Initiative”. His first reason basically says that it doesn’t make anything more efficient or easier, but it makes it look better. As for his second reason, he says administrators just want to spend money and when asking for $200,000 for smartboards sounds better than saying they need the money to improve learning outcomes. He basically just says it’s a cop out when asking for money for technology. As for Bill Ferriter, he gives, in my opinion, more persuading reasons as to why he hates interactive white boards. The main reason I believe his reasons are more believable are because he experimented with a smartboard for a year. He goes on to say that even after time, they will become known as really expensive over head projectors. He also says that the idea of a perfect classroom would be to promote independent discovery and collaborative work so why are we spending so much money on tools that do not promote these two things. While I found it difficult searching for an argument to these approaches, one article titled “Using Smart Boards in K-12 Classroom”, gives both pros and cons to using smart boards. The main idea of the use of smart boards according to this article is that this world is becoming so technological and using smart boards for students helps them to become a part of the technology world. Introducing them to technology in the classroom is one way to help them in life. This article also says teachers need to decide for themselves if using a smart board would be helpful or not. I think this is the best thing because for some teachers smart boards might truly help them in a classroom while others, such as Michael Staton and Bill Ferriter, do not believe they are in any way helpful. I found this article very imformative: http://www.brighthub.com/education/k-12/reviews/9759.aspx

Additional Assignent #2

How Kids Teach Themselves
1. What do you think? If learners are motivated, can they teach themselves?
2. If those motivated learners are kids, can they teach themselves?
3. What conditions are necessary for kids to teach themselves? For anyone to teach him or herself?
4. What role do computers and internet access play in the process?
5. What role does motivation, a desire to learn?
6. What roles do a problem, a question or multiple problems or questions play in the process?
7. How do you motivate someone to learn?
8. How are you motivated to learn?
9. Can anyone who is not motivated to learn learn?
10. Do you teach yourself? When? Why?
11. What role does a teacher (either answer generally or use a specific example) play in your learning?
12. What is the most important idea, question or emotional response you take away with you as a result of watching this video?
13. What other questions or issues are raised by this video that should be considered and discussed by aspiring teachers?
1. I do think learners can teach themselves if they’re motivated. We have had to teach ourselves a lot for this class, and when I’m motivated, it makes it that much easier.
2. I think motivated learners that are kids can teach themselves to a certain point.
3. They need to have technology. When they have a computer they can research and find answers through search engines.
4. They have a major part in this process. The learners, especially children, need to have the computer to teach themselves.
5. Motivation and desire play, in my opinion, the biggest role in this process. The child or learner needs to be completely motivated or they won’t be interested in learning.
6. The role of questions or problems play a major role as well. They make the learner think as well as answer in a timely matter.
7. Motivating someone to learn could be considered one of the most difficult experiences of being an educator. You have to change the way the kids are use to looking at it and make it interesting for them.
8. I am motivated by my teachers and peers. When the people around me are studying and wanting to learn as well as my teacher being excited about teaching makes me want to learn as well.
9. Anyone not motivated to learn can still learn, but it will make the process longer and more difficult.
10. I don’t always teach myself, but sometimes I have to. For this class I have had to teach myself a lot. Although we are given instructions there isn’t someone there showing us step by step. For other classes that I teach myself in, it’s only because the teacher isn’t doing a good job.
11. Teachers have always played a huge role in my learning process. If a teacher is excited and interesting as well as interacts with the class then it is so helpful and much easier to learn. This class has taught me how to teach myself with some instructions.
12. I think the most important idea from this video was when he asked the lady to teach the kids about science. Her response was she didn’t know how it how could she teach it. He told her to just act like a grandmother and admire what the kids were saying and doing. As she did this for 2 months the kids grades went up 20%. This is amazing and proves that repetition alone can improve the learning process.
13. I think teachers need to realize how much kids look up to them and want to “impress” them in the class room. For example, the teacher I was talking about in the above question would say to the students, “oh that’s cool”, “can you do that again for me?”. These statements and questions let the students know the teacher is interested in how they’re doing.

Project 10: PLN progress report

For my PLN I've been playing around on Symbaloo. So far, mine is nothing like the 7th graders PLN, but I am working on it each week to perfect it. So far I have the originial favorites it started with such as twitter, apple, and youtube. I have added my personal blog, the EDM310 class blog, the manual and a few others. It is really helpful because I am constantly on the internet for this class and having these sites all on the same page saves me some time. I have found myself to be interested in things I've learned from in this class that I never thought I would be interested in. I think technology is great, but little did I know it was so useful and helpful for all ages, especially in the schooling systems. Once I have my PLN exactly how I want it I will post a link to show you.

Blog Post 7

Randy Pausch's Last Lecture
To start off this video, Mr. Randy says why this is called the Last Lecture. He has been diagnosed with 10 tumors in his liver and only has 6 weeks to live. He is not in denial, but still living life exactly how he should. This lecture was not about cancer, not about things more important than your childhood dreams, and not about religion or spirituality. This lecture was about childhood dreams, enabling the dreams of others, and lessons learned—how to achieve these dreams…or was it? The idea of anything is possible is true according to Mr. Randy. His childhood dreams consisted of being in zero gravity, playing in the NFL, authoring an article in the World Encyclopedia, being captain Kirk, winning a stuffed animal, and being a Disney Imagineer.

His first childhood dream was accomplished. NASA had a ship called the Vomit Comet and his students were able to go. He thought he was going because he was the professor of these students, but later found out professors could not attend only local journalists. He turned in papers and was able to go as a journalist. His next dream as an NFL star was not accomplished. Although this was not accomplished he learned more from playing football than he did anything. I can relate to this because I played a lot of sports. He was 9 years old when he started playing and he was the smallest kid in the league. He was taught fundamentals as well as learning what caring was. He was constantly nagged on by the coach and later found out when they’re nagging they care, when they stop nagging, they stop caring. I find this to be true as well. All through sports my coaches would get mad at me and I would go home upset. My dad always told me as long as they are getting mad they still care and haven’t given up. When you learn something young enough it becomes a part of you. He had an important quote in his lecture that I find to be true myself; “Experience is what you get when you didn’t get what you wanted”. Another important thing he learned from his experience of playing football was the “Head Fake”. This is when you think you’re doing something, but you’re actually learning something more important and better for you. His third dream came true as well. He wrote a virtual article for the World Encyclopedia. As for his fourth dream, he didn’t become Captain Kirk, but he did meet Captain Kirk. One major thing he learned from Captain Kirk was leadership. James T. Kirk wrote a book called Science of Star Trec and from that Mr. Randy was able to build a virtual lab. His fifth dream was to win stuffed animals from theme parks. He won a bunch of these animals and showed pictures to prove. With today’s technology and cynicism he had to actually bring the stuffed animals in person to really prove he had accomplished this dream. As for his final dream, he found out about Disney’s top secret virtual reality Imagineering about Aladin. He talked to Mr. Jon Snoody for 80 hours about Virtual Reality and convinced him he really knew what he was talking about. One thing he learned from Mr. Snoody was that when you give people a chance they will really impress you. I love this because it is so true. When you really hate someone and they do everything in the world to make you mad, one day, whether it is 5 or 10 years, they will impress you.

While everything was going right for Mr. Randy, there was one bad person to try and ruin it all. He was the Dean of the University of Virginia and he called him “Dean Wormer”. He basically told him he couldn’t do what he wanted and Mr. Randy took it to the Dean of Research. While the Dean of Research told Mr. Randy the same things, he said it very differently and with the way he answered Mr. Randy had hope again. Building this Virtual Reality of Aladin at Disney World changed him forever. He said he believes it’s about a one in 5 year chance of doing this and when asked if he would be a REAL Imagineer he said no. He went on with his career as a professor and started a course called Building Virtual Reality. This course consisted of 50 people, 4 people to a team, 5 projects which lasted 2 weeks, and new teams for every new project. He invited people from every department and the virtual reality’s these students created amazed him. He taught the course for 10 years. When he had to give it up he decided it needed to go to someone better then he was. He said when you love something so much pass it on to someone better than you.

He then talks about the Entertainment Technology Center (ETC) and gives most of his credit to a man named Don. It required a 2 year masters, but was not like any other masters. There were no books and it was all projects. While the students were at internships, the companies guaranteed these students jobs from this school. The Alice project is then talked about and this is about millions of kids learning something hard while having fun; this is being a true educator.

As for the lesson learned of his lecture, many people he has to thank. First he talks about how great his parents were, full of life. His dad fought in WWII and won a bronze star for valor award, but no one knew, including his wife of 50 years, until his death. His mom was there for him through things like school. While he took the Theory Qualifier, he believes it was the second worse thing after chemo. He would come home and complain about this and his mother’s response was “we know how you feel, when your father was your age he was fighting the Germans”. His parents let him do things like paint his room and he suggested anyone who has kids who want to paint their room, let them. I can relate to this because 5th grade through high-school I painted my room about four different times. My parents knew it didn’t matter in the long run so what will it hurt? Others that helped him with lessons learned were his teachers, mentors, friends, and colleagues. Andy Van Dam, being one of his mentors, told him he never understood why people perceived him as arrogant and this wasn’t good because it would limit him on what he does. Mr. Andy talked him into going to grad school and becoming a teacher. He told him he was a great salesman and what’s better to sale then education? I think this is great because I myself am a great salesperson and I hope this will help with my career as an educator. While Mr. Randy was not accepted to Carnegie Mellon grad-school, he was basically giving up and going straight to work. He talked with Mr. Andy and with connections he was able to get in. He believes loyalty is a two way street as well as Karma.

This lecture overall was great words of wisdom with so many knowledgeable facts that will remain with me throughout my career as an educator. He makes sure to point out that you should always get a feedback loop and listen to it. Show gratitude and don’t complain just work harder. Always be good at something because that shows you’re valuable and find the best in everybody. Always be prepared for anything and the greatest part of this whole lecture was the “head fake”: lead your life. This was not about the three things he originally said, childhood dreams, enabling dreams of others, and lessons learned, it was about leading your life.

Summary for C4T 2

The first teacher I was assigned for C4T 2 wrote about students and blogging. Her title was Reflecting on the Value of Blogging. She and her class believe that blogging is a great way to express their thoughts and set goals. Her students are able to communicate their ideas and experiences just from knowing an audience is reading their blogs. They have realized the values of proof reading and editing their work before posting. I agree with what she has said because before this class I did not blog. Now that I am and know my future bosses will be reading what I have said I want to write things I will not be ashamed of in the near future. She says she and her class believe blogging has given them a real reason to write and I agree completely with that statement. I feel now that I’m not just writing for a class, I’m writing to express my thoughts and feelings about an issue and the world can see my opinion.

The second teacher I was assigned for C4T 2 is a different teacher than the first teacher I was assigned. Mr. Larry Ferlazzo is his name and the title of his blog post is The Best Sites For Images of Fall Foliage (& For Teaching About The Season). This post Mr. Ferlazzo basically just posted a list of sites that had information about the season of fall. What I found really interesting about this was he did not just post websites that had strictly written information. He posted sites with pictures and even songs on them. I think this is great because many people like me, are visual learners or learn better by listening. He also posts different geographical locations with pictures. I thought this blog post was really cool because I love the season of fall especially the colors.

The networked student by: Wendy Drexler

I really enjoyed watching this video because it was extremely informative. The networked student is a student that in most cases does not have a text book and learns through the network he or she has created. This is much like our EDM 310 class because we only meet every so often and we have to create our own learning network.
A teacher is needed to steer the students through learning how to use the networking process. Our EDM310 class has labs every week that are helpful because the teachers can help to direct us. Although the teacher is there to direct us, we do it on our own. This forces us to learn things and we will then be able to teach our students these things.

A 7th grader’s personal learning environment

I was amazed at how organized this 7th grader’s Personal Learning Environment was. I thought I was pretty advanced in the 7th grade with technology, but I am quickly learning I was wrong. My PLN is not even close to this 7th graders PLE. Hers was much more advanced and organized. I was very impressed and hope I can one day be this technology literate as well as teach my students to be.

The Machine is Changing us by: Michael Wesch

I thought this video was quite intriguing. Mr. Wesch delivered his speech extremely well. As he introduced his concept of Media Ecology, it really got me thinking. This idea of Media Ecology is that the media are environments and they arbitrate conversations then conversations change who we are. We all look at the media for things about how to dress and what to say. Wesch’s comparison of his students in a classroom to people auditioning for American Idol shows how media impacts us. The students in the classroom were extremely bored while the American Idol contestants were excited. Therefore, the role of media controls our lives.
I think the media has a lot of impact on myself as well as fellow classmates. Most of my clothes I wear because movie stars have them and they are trendy. Mr. Wesch does a great job delivering his speech and being enthusiastic throughout.

Summary for C4K 1 and 2

C4K 1: The little girl I was assigned to for the C4K assignments is named Yessy. She is 14 years old and she is the oldest of four. She has two little sisters and a little brother. She describes herself as a nice girl, easy going and loves meeting new people. She said her biggest pet peeve was when people talked bad about people. She went on to tell many of her favorite things such as color, food, and animals. I loved how colorful she made her post and we seem to have many things in common. She seems like a pretty awesome girl and very mature.

C4K 2: I was assigned a different assignment for this.
The student I commented on is a student in a class similar to our EDM310 class. She is striving to be a Kindergarten teacher which is what I want to be. Her assignment was to think about technology for younger students and watch some videos. She went on to say she loved how interested the little girl in the video was in technology. I think it’s a great idea to start the technology at such a young age because for one, they are interested and two they will need it in the future so why not? This reminded me of the story we read about the 6 year old boy playing with the iPad without instructions. I think it’s awesome how easy technology is becoming for 5 and 6 year olds to use.

Another blog post I commented on was her post about using widgets and Skype. I haven’t worked much with widgets but I do use Skype a lot. I talk with my friends and my boyfriends who are off at different schools! I really enjoyed reading her thoughts and giving her mine as well.

Eagle’s Nest Radio and Class Blog

This was several different podcasts that were done by a third grade class. These were very interesting podcasts. The first one was the third grade class teaching us about Rome. I learned many facts I didn’t know about Rome like the fact that Cleopatra was not Egyptian, she was actually from Rome. I thought the music in the background went well with each kid and their tone of voice. I really enjoyed listening to this.
The second podcast this third grade class created was called Totally Terrific Time Travel with Explorers. I liked the effects in this podcast. When Lizzie went on to give her vocabulary lesson there was an echo. It was just enough to make effects, but not too much to annoy the listener.
The third podcast created was called Take a BITE Out of Shark Facts. I love how enthusiastic the kids are and they keep me listening. Most third graders are shy, but these kids seem very smart and mature. I really love their podcasts and I will be using theirs as examples.
Lastly, the final podcast was an interview called A Shark-tastic Interview where she interviewed a shark expert named Mr. Ward. The little girl doing the interview asked many great questions and the class responded well to Mr. Ward’s answers. These kids are very intelligent and I learned so much from all of their podcasts.

Podcast Collection by: Judy Scharf

This information from Judy Scharf was very informative and helpful. She tells what a podcast is exactly and it is a combination between a “broadcast” and an iPod. I have seen the podcast option on my iTunes and I never really knew what it was. Not only does she tell us what a Podcast is, she gives links to show how to use it as well as tips. Not only is this helpful for everyday knowledge about Podcasts, it will be extremely helpful when making the Podcasts for this class.

100 Ways to Use you iPod to Learn and Study better

I found this extremely enlightening because I had no idea you could do all this with your iPod. My group’s topic for our Podcast is using an iPad in schools. This list of 100 ways to use it to learn and study from is so helpful. Even though Sparknotes was number one on the list it really grabbed my attention. The women that wrote this is right when she says Sparknotes are a student’s best friend. I used Sparknotes more in high-school than I used my textbooks. I loved this because I now know so many new things about the iPad.

Additional Assignment #1

A. and B. Google Squared and WolframAlpha provide so many educational implications. My biggest pet peeve is when I search for something and I get thousands of results that have nothing to do with what I searched for. These two search engines were so helpful in that they were quick and found exactly what I was looking for. Research papers obviously require research, with these two search engines the stress of finding results you’re unsure of or can’t trust doesn’t exist anymore.

C and D. Before this assignment I did not know either of these search engines even existed. I’ve never heard of them and I’m actually thankful for this assignment because I really like using these search engines.

E. My thoughts didn’t really change about the “Did you know?” video. I thought it was insane about China and India but I did take into consideration the sizes of the two countries.

F. I learned that when you look at statistics you can’t just look at, for example, population numbers. You have to look at the size of the location as well. You have to take all numbers into consideration, not just the certain number you’re looking at.

Food for Thought Post: I think it is pretty amazing that a 6 year old was able to use an iPad. I think iPad and iTouches are great for learning and easy to use, obviously.

Don’t teach your kids this stuff. Please? By Scott Mcleod

After reading Dr. Mcleod’s blog about “not” teaching your kids or students to use technology, I completely agree with him. I love how sarcastic he is because I too am very sarcastic. Kids need to learn these crazy things about technology and they need to learn as early as possible. This is because technology changes so fast, when something new comes out kids should immediately start to use it. Technology is the key to the future and without learning about it, kids will not be as successful as they are capable of being.
Dr. Mcleod is an Associate Professor of Educational Administration at Iowa State University and the Director of the UCEA Center for the Advancement Study of Technology in Education (CASTLE). He also is the creator of the “Did you know?” video we watched in a previous blog assignment. I actually really enjoyed that video, it had some crazy facts.

The iSchool initiative

Travis Allen is a 17 year old at a public high-school in Georgia. He starts off by saying he has a solution to the problem in public school systems. He asks the question of “Does technology belong in our classroom?” I think he answered his own question as yes and thoroughly explained why. He says it will change the face of public education which is much needed in Mobile County.
He made some extremely ideal points for the idea of an ischool. His estimated amount of money saved is $600 a student. I believe an ischool would actually save more money than $600 a student. All the apps he mentioned on the itouch are great for the classroom. The problem I have with this is that there are thousands of apps that aren’t good for a classroom, but students who are easily distracted can make use of them in the classroom, which wouldn’t be a good thing. Another problem about apps like Calendar or Classics is that many students, like me, are more of hands on. I like to write my assignments and write my notes. I could bring my laptop to class and take notes and I would probably get a lot more written down or typed if I did this, but writing it is a study method as well. The same goes for when I write an assignment down, I tend to remember it more so than when I type it. I think the ischool would be great for many students, but like I’ve said before in other blog posts, not all students learn the same. And to answer the question of “Does technology belong in our classroom?” I believe it is yes, to a certain point. Not an entire school though.

The Lost Generation Video

I agree completely with this video. I think when people tell us things and we don’t try to argue or give a rebuttal, and we just go a long with what they say, that’s how things will be. If we reverse what they say and prove them wrong, we can live our lives how we want rather than how someone else wants us to. I found this video to be very cool. I loved how when she reversed what she said the words stayed the same, but the statements were reversed. Genius.

Eric Whitaker’s Virtual Video

I actually hated this video. I don’t believe this use of the internet is good. If I want to hear this and see this I feel like it would be much more rewarding actually going to a theater and hearing it. Don’t get me wrong, this is intelligent and amazing that technology can actually do these things, but again, I didn’t like it. This reminds me of watching a music channel on TV and seeing your favorite artist in concert. It just isn’t the same actually getting tickets and going to see your favorite artist LIVE in concert. This was interesting, but I don’t believe this is what technology should be used for.

Project 5: google presentation

Blog Post 3

Michael Wesch: A video of students today
I think this video was quite intriguing. It definitely captures my college experiences. If I bring my laptop to class I usually do other things on it than take notes. When I’m sitting in an auditorium like the one in this video, it is much harder to learn. A classroom with, at most, 30 people is a better learning environment. Coming to South was a major wakeup call because my high-school was small and the classes only had 25 people in them. Every teacher knew my name and still knows who I am after being gone for 3 years. My teachers at South didn’t/ don’t know my name and it’s easy for me to skip class. I will graduate with more than $20,000 in debt. I spend way more time watching TV and playing on the internet than I do studying or going to class. I really enjoyed this video and I can relate to those students in many ways.

Its not about technology by: Kelly Hines
I have to agree with Mrs. Hines for the most part. We definitely don’t NEED these technologies in classrooms, but I do think they will make things run smoother and more can be taught. Mrs. Hines had some valid points in her argument, but the major point I agree with is that learning and teaching are not the same thing. Educators need to realize not all students learn at the same speed with the same techniques. Many students are visual learners, while others are not. If one student understood a concept one day but another student did not that does not mean the student that didn’t understand didn’t learn; it just wasn’t taught to he or she the right way. I agree with the fact that it is not all about the technology, it is about the teacher. If the teacher knows how to use the technology then the students will be ready for the future. As long as a teacher is using technology, but does not know exactly how to use it they are doing the students no good. Mrs. Hines had very good arguments and I can see why she believes it is not about the technology.

Karl Fisch: Is It Okay to Be A Technologically Illiterate Teacher?
Mr. Fisch’s blog really made me realize some things. I never really thought about the equivalence of a teacher today who is technology illiterate and a teacher 30 years ago not able to read or write. After hearing what all Mr. Fisch had to say, I completely agree with this statement. No one has ever been proud that he or she couldn’t read or write and today no one should be proud if they are technology illiterate. I have a lot more to learn when it comes to the world of technology, but I am willing and ready. Most teachers think they are very smart and know everything. I’m not saying teachers aren’t smart, but there is always room to learn. Teachers who are in their late 50s early 60s are usually the ones that really think they know it all. The truth is, they are probably the most technology illiterate than anyone. If a teacher is too stubborn and not willing to learn, they will never be successful at what they do.
Technology can seem scary and I think most of the problems for teachers who aren’t willing to learn about it are just scared. I think they are scared they will be unsuccessful at learning about things a student could teach them. In their minds, they are the teacher not the student so why should the student teach them? Who cares who is teaching who? My grandmother is 81 years old and knows how to text. I taught her and she was not scared of not being able to do it. She tried it and succeeded (Let’s just hope she doesn’t text and drive). The point is, if teachers aren’t willing to learn about technology, it’s not because they don’t think it is necessary for the classroom, they are just scared that they won’t be able to do it. Over all I really enjoyed Mr. Fisch’s post and I do agree with him for the most part.

Gary Hayes: Social Media Count
These numbers are changing at a ridiculously fast rate. These changes mean I need to constantly learn all the new things that come from technology so I will not be far behind as an educator.

Summary for C4T 1

The first blog I read by Jen Deyenberg was about a video game on WII called Endless Ocean 2: Blue World (Adventures of the Deep in the UK). She talked about how she uses this video game to help teach her 5th grade class about the wetlands. She says how the game can be used to study measurements, ecosystems, food web, history, and a comparison of freshwater vs. saltwater. The game doesn’t use real locations, but the places used are real in that the animals, context, and ecosystem fit with the Aegean Sea. One thing I learned from her blog was that she noted polar bears and penguins do not live together and this is a common misconception. She explains how the game portrays this and it is a great game to use in the classroom environment.

The second blog I read by Jen Deyenberg was very interesting. It was titled Using Twitter in the Classroom. She talked about how she uses Twitter in the classroom. This seems crazy because everyone believes Twitter is just something you follow famous people on, which is exactly what I use my Twitter for. She has been able to connect with teachers all over the world through Twitter. Once she met the teachers on Twitter, they were able to connect their classrooms through Skype. She says Twitter “created an audience for their projects”. Because I only used Twitter to follow famous people, I’m glad to know I can use it for more practical things. I really enjoyed reading Ms. Jen Deyenberg’s blogs!

Blog Post #2

Did you know?

I found this video really interesting. I liked all the information it gave and the title works really well considering I didn’t know almost all of what it told me. It’s crazy to think how fast technology is changing and it makes you wonder why you’re learning about technology now when in two years it will be changing and what you learned will feel like it is pointless to know.

This video is also saying that basically China and India will be taking over because they have more honors kids than America has kids, period; which is insane. The fact that 1 out of 8 couples that were married met on the internet is also insane. I think a lot of it has to do with where you are from because being from the south, I like the old fashioned way of dating and meeting a guy, not the internet. The internet is scary because of how much it can do and know.

The facts about text messaging didn’t surprise me too much. The increasing amount of internet devices is crazy in such a short amount of time. The part about the supersmart computer in 2013 is weird because it says it will exceed the human brain…who will be able to use it if this is the case and who invents it? Another computer? Over all, this video was very cool and informative. I really enjoyed it.

Mr. Winkles Video

This video is different because I never really stop and think like 15 years ago when I was 5, things were so different when it comes to technology. My dad had a cell phone but it was a bag phone that stayed in the car and year after year the cell phone became more detailed. I remember in 8th grade going from the Nokia phone to a color screen. Then touch screen, video, and internet. This video makes you really think about how fast technology changes and what stays the same and what doesn’t.

Ken Robinson says schools kill creativity Video

Obviously I am not working in education yet, but when he talks about talking to people about education I get the same reaction. When I tell people my major is education they look at me like I’m crazy and ask why? You have to look at the big picture; it’s rewarding. The fact that you can teach a child or help a child to learn something and that child really takes a liking to it. He or she will eventually go on in life to do great things with that one thing you helped them learn about. This has to be one of the most rewarding things in life.

“If you’re not prepared to be wrong you will not come up with anything creative”. I like this quote because I firmly believe that and agree. If a teacher asks a question that you’re not sure about just answer anyway because being wrong is being creative. You can never be scared to answer a question.

Ken Robinson says everywhere you go on earth the education pyramid is the same. Math, science, English, ect, but the arts are always at the bottom. Educators start educating from the waste and move up to the head and eventually just focus on the brain. I agree with this and I think it is wrong. Not only should they focus more on your whole body for creativity reasons, but it would help with the obesity problem we have in America. Most high schools and colleges require a Physical Education class, for one semester. This is nothing. They require two or three sciences, two or three math classes, but one semester of a PE. Dance is only one example of the arts, but dancers are some of the most talented people on earth. Not only did they, in most cases, go to school for an education (because like he said that’s the only way you’ll get somewhere in life) they also stayed with what they believed in which was dance. So, there are the people who went to school and became a doctor. Smart people, right? Their brain is smart, but their creativity is dull.

I really enjoyed this video and agree with it completely. His jokes were pretty funny too!

Vicki Davis: Harness your student’s digital smarts video

This video was interesting because it reminded me a lot of this EDM 310 class. Vicki Davis said she often assigns things for the students to do, but she doesn’t know how to do them herself. This is cool because this forces the student to actually learn, not memorize just for the one class period, to really learn how to do to it to where he or she can teach it. Our class is a lot like that because we only meet 3 out of 16 weeks of school and although our assignments haven’t been extremely difficult yet, I still have had to basically teach myself. Yes, there are people to help me, but they don’t show me what to do, I am learning.

It’s cool that even though these students are in a small part of Georgia where not many people come or go, the students are all over the world through technology. They were talking and sharing things with students in India. I do believe the increase in technology is great, but at the same time I hope it never completely takes over to where people quit traveling to see the world and quit exploring because they can just get on the computer and see and hear all they need to.

Not all students are going to be interested in technology, but I do believe it’s important for everyone to learn all they can while they can. Like I said before, although I don’t want technology to take completely over, it is going to be a major component needed to survive in this world. In order to get jobs, in order to become educated technology is a necessity and learning it is a good thing.

Blog Post #1

Hello all,
My name is Kristen Hayes and I was born and raised in Mobile, Al. I have lived here my entire life and I love it, which is why I stayed here for college. I attended UMS-Wright for high-school and I played sports (basketball and soccer). My intrests are probably shopping, going to the beach, and sports.
As for my family, I have one brother who is older than me and graduated from Alabama. I also have 4 cats and 2 dogs, which is ridiculous. I still live at home with my mom and dad. I have a boyfriend who I have been dating for 5 years. We went to high-school together and he plays soccer at West Florida in Pensacola. I usually go to Pensacola on the weekends.
I decided recently that I want to be a teacher because over the past couple years I have been babysitting and I have had so much fun doing it.
That's about all my life consists of, but I like it.
